To welcome the Year of the Horse and allow international students to experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture up close, our school organized the immersive Spring Festival cultural experience activity themed “Spring Festival Cultural Experience in the Year of the Horse” before the Spring Festival. With four themed practical sessions, the activity enabled international students to perceive the unique charm of the Chinese New Year through hands-on participation.The activity kicked off warmly with the theme of “Blessingsinthe Year of the Horse”. Volunteers gave bilingual introductions to the cultural implications of the Chinese character “Fu” (blessing), the culture of Spring Festival couplets, and basic knowledge of antithetical parallelism, while demonstrating calligraphy writing skills and guiding international students to hold and move writing brushes hand in hand. All participants wielded brushes to write the character “Fu” and classic Spring Festival couplets. Their works were assembled into a creative blessing wall displaying the message “Happy Spring Festival”. Red blessing characters paired with bright smiles froze numerous warm and wonderful moments.The subsequent traditional arrow-throwing game brought relaxing fun to the scene. Holding throwing arrows,theinternationalstudentsexperienced this elegant traditional pastime in a joyful atmosphere. Through repeated attempts and bursts of laughter, they appreciated the leisure and delight of ancient Chinese banquet entertainments, creating a harmonious and lively atmosphere on site.The intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting session allowed participants to discover the traditional beauty crafted at their fingertips. Teachers introduced the cultural value of paper-cutting as an intangible cultural heritage and the festive implications of Spring Festival paper-cut works in both Chinese and English, and demonstrated basic cutting techniques. International students then created their own works, cutting out vivid zodiac horse patterns and festive window decorations. Every fold and cut let them feel the exquisite craftsmanship of this traditional heritage.The activity concluded with a warm lantern DIY session themed “Ride the Horse to Greet the Lantern Festival”. Volunteers explained the cultural meanings of traditional lanterns and detailed production steps. International students gave full play to their creativity by painting patterns, pasting paper-cut decorations and writing bilingual blessings on the lanterns to make exclusive handmade lanterns. Under the warm glow of the lantern lights, participants shared and communicated with each other while holding their finished works, immersing themselves in the warm and reunion atmosphere of the Chinese New Year.Bridging cultures through practical experience, this activity allowed international students to immerse themselves in traditional Spring Festival customs including calligraphy writing, arrow throwing, paper-cutting and lantern making. It enabled them to truly understand the cultural connotations of the Chinese New Year through hands-on practice and built a warm bridge for Sino-foreign cultural exchanges.
